P.E.R.C.Y Radio
[Pontypridd Emergeny Radio & Communications Ynysangharad]
Inspired by Orson Welles’ 1938 ‘War of the Worlds’, Pontypridd’s Emergency Radio and Communications Ynysangharad [P.E.R.C.Y] was an interactive community arts project depicting a fictional local radio station’s mission to report live on an alien invasion as it unfolded.
Participants were guided via the P.E.R.C.Y radio broadcast podcast to visit the makeshift station in the Pontypridd Market food hall, where they were invited to participate by reporting their extraterrestrial sightings to update radio listeners as the story developed.
An audio transcript of the broadcast was available for participants who are deaf or hard of hearing, in the form of a newspaper handout, which could be found at the radio station during the art trail.
“Pontypridd Market is the perfect location for P.E.R.C.Y – as the community hub of the town, it felt like a very natural place for Ponty residents to gather in the event of an alien invasion.
I designed P.E.R.C.Y, [aptly named after my dog, who similarly to the aliens in question, causes chaos in a daily basis], with the aim of encouraging imagination and spontaneity from residents of Pontypridd – I believe the interactive arts are perfect for bringing playfulness and humour to our everyday lives.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to Nigel from the market for allowing me to convince his customers that aliens have invaded, as well as to Heloise, Sarah, Becky, Laura, Beth, Mike, Tim, Gini, Katy and Lanty, and everyone at USW who has helped make my uni experience incredible”

Connections: An Exploration of Creativity, Nature and Identity
ORIEL YR AELWYD, Hearth Gallery 2021
"As part of the Gwanwyn festival this year, The Hearth Gallery is delighted to announce our new exhibition, Connections: an exploration of Creativity, Nature and Identity, which is a showcase of artwork and creativity produced within a recent collaborative art project between University students and patients at hospital.
Between January and March this year, second year students on BA (Hons) Creative and Therapeutic Arts at the University of South Wales, and patients and staff on Ward East 18, An Adult Mental Health Ward at University Hospital Llandough, have collaborated together by virtually sending ‘digital artwork postcards’ back and forth. The students began by creating their first ‘postcard’ based on themes and ideas the patients had talked about in a live virtual greeting session at the start of the project in January.
With the first collection of ‘digital artwork postcards’ received from the students, the staff on Ward E18 provided creative art sessions with the patients to respond to the students by making their own artwork using a variety of creative materials and ideas. Photographs of the creative work were then sent back to the students and the process was repeated. Each corresponding artwork was created based on the theme or style of the one received.
This project was a chance to creatively connect with a group of people who, like so many during Covid-19 restrictions, felt isolated from family and friends. The staff on Ward E18 were incredibly interested in having the students at University of South Wales collaborate with the patients, to provide a welcome distraction and entertainment to their day to day routine." - Cardiff and Vale Art, 2021

'THISBRANDDOESNOTEXIST'
"Inspired by the disconnect in fashion between streetwear and formal wear, THISBRANDDOESNOTEXIST creates a fusion between the two, whilst investigating the theme of brand identity from an anti-establishment viewpoint. Working in a progressive way against fast fashion's environmental impact, proposing upcycling as a more contemporary, sustainable take on "next level" garments for a young millennial demographic. Vibrant designs inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's Post Impressionism and the classic 'neon lights' city life aesthetic have inspired the brand's modern, energetic identity, whilst unisex garments allow for an all-embracing collection within an area of fashion that is often considered exclusive and unobtainable - now with a high-street budget"
